HORTON PLAINS | Srilankan Guides
Horton Plains National Park, known as “Maha-Eliya” in Sinhala, is a park in the highlands of Sri Lanka. It is located at an altitude of over 2,000 m in the central highlands, which gives it a cooler and windier climate compared to the warmer lowlands of Sri Lanka. The mean annual temperature here is 16 °C, in contrast to the coastal areas with a temperature of 26 °C. The park got its name in 1834 in honor of Lady Anne Horton, the wife of Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton, who was the governor of Ceylon at that time.
