Bentota is a city on the southern coast of Sri Lanka, known for its beautiful golden beaches. It is in the Galle District of the Southern Province. Many tourists, especially from other countries, like to visit this town. The name “Bentota” comes from a story from ancient times about a demon named Bem who ruled the riverbank (tota means river bank). Bentota has some well-known hotels and is the home of the famous Sri Lankan jeweler, Aida. People in Bentota practice an ancient form of healing called Ayurveda. The city is also famous for producing Toddy, an alcoholic beverage made from coconut nectar. The population of the city is estimated to be between 25,000 and 50,000.
